Steps to Follow Before You Buy a Towel Set

  • We all love the feeling of stepping out of the shower and wrapping ourselves up in a cosy, soft towel. However, if your towel is feeling rough or is not drying you off properly, then it may be time for an upgrade. In this day and age, there are endless options of towels that all boast a variety of features, which makes it a difficult task when someone is shopping for towels. Sure, everyone would just like to go out and buy towels that feel soft and look luxurious, but will that towel fulfil your needs? And do you know exactly what a “gram count” actually means? How do you tell the difference between Turkish cotton and Egyptian cotton? Which colour is the right choice for you and your home?

Let us have a look at some of the key factors to consider before you buy a new towel set for your home:

Determine the size: Towels come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, which should be considered before you make a purchase. Your standard bath towel that you use to dry off after a shower is 27” x 52”, whereas a bath sheet is slightly larger, measuring up to 35” x 60”. Bath sheets allow for more coverage, which means that you are able to fully wrap yourself up after a bath. If you are looking for a smaller option, then either go for a hand towel  or a square washcloth.

Decide on the weight: Bath towel density is measured in grams per meter or GSM. This number normally varies between 300 and 900. A 300 – 400g towel has a thinner and lighter design, making it perfect for places like the gym or your kitchen. As you can imagine, these towels will dry a lot quicker than the heavier towels. A 400 – 600g towel is considered a medium weight towel and it is perfect for the beach, plus it can be used as your everyday towel. Finally, we have a heavy towel, which has a GSM between 600 and 900, which means that it is dense, very absorbent, and, at the same time, it will feel extra luxurious and soft. But as you can imagine, the towel will require much more time do dry.

Choose your cotton: Your everyday towels will normally be made of standard cotton. On the other hand, Turkish cotton has longer fibres, which gives the towel more durability with a softer feel.  These towels will have longer, denser loops of thread that absorb much more moisture, plus they retain heat much better. These towels also tend to become softer with each wash that you give them.

Caring for your towel: It is recommended that you wash your towel before using it for the first time, as this will set the colour, improve absorbency, and reduce any lint. Avoid using any fabric softeners.

Lucky for you, there are plenty of bath towels for sale from most big brand shops.
